Can culture win a political war? Join us on the 100th birthday of artist Robert Rauchenberg to revisit the provocative story of the 1964 Venice Biennale where he was awarded the Grand Prize, a first for an American. This pivotal art event became the backdrop for controversy and intrigue, as rumors circulated that the United States government and influential officials manipulated the outcome. Rauschenberg’s combinations of street junk and images from pop culture were not yet taken seriously by the art world. The result provoked an outcry from the international press with accusations of manipulation and unfairness. Rauschenberg himself departed Venice grappling with doubts about the nationalist politics that overshadowed his victory and questioning the true motivations behind his participation in the Biennale.
