Description:
Birdseye’s annual residency program House Chair Tool Garden provides an eligible architecture student with the opportunity to develop their artistic vision within the professional setting of our architecture studio in Richmond, Vermont.
The resident proposes a conceptual framework from which they develop a single place-based project. Their work is self-directed, with support and critique from the architects and craftspeople of Birdseye. Interaction and engagement are fostered between the resident and the architects, builders, woodworkers, metalsmiths, masons, and machine operators across the company.
This residency is hosted specifically for residents of Vermont who are attending architecture school anywhere, or anyone attending architecture school in Vermont. Full eligibility requirements below.
Project Brief:
Design a conceptually-grounded, site-specific project located in Vermont composed of the four elements below and the activities they accommodate.
-House: Design a house for living.
-Chair: Design a chair for sitting.
-Tool: Design a tool for transforming.
-Garden: Design a landscape for placemaking.
Resident Commitments:
-Work independently for approximately 3 months at the Birdseye Architecture Studio in Richmond, Vermont during regular office hours (7:00AM–5:30PM Monday through Thursday) and any additional time as pursued by the resident.
-Active curiosity towards and engagement with the entire Birdseye community.
-Weekly pin-ups for informal critique.
-Final presentation to the Birdseye team and any invited public.
-Residents will secure their own living and transportation arrangements (Burlington, located less than 30 minutes from our office, is a college town with many summer sublet opportunities)
Birdseye Commitments:
-Weekly informal critiques and feedback sessions.
-General availability for guidance and mentorship with the resident and their work.
-Shadowing opportunities with Birdseye’s non-architecture departments.
-Desk space in our Architecture Studio.
-Analog tools and supplies for drawing and model making.
-Laptop with Autodesk Suite, Adobe Suite, Lumion, and SketchUp.
-Small and large format scanners and printers.
-$14,000 stipend.
-$1,000 materials budget.

Eligibility:
-Applicants must be either: (a) Vermont residents who are attending architecture school anywhere in the world or (b) residents of anywhere in the world who are attending architecture school in Vermont.
-Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate architecture program and plan to return to school after their residency.
