AIAVT Member Valeriano C. Zarro Publishes "Place-Specific Design: Architecture for Visible Sustainability"

Place-Specific Design: Architecture for Visible Sustainability promotes a "visibly sustainable" architectural approach that is rooted in place to deter and reverse the erosion of cultural and ecological diversity. As a direct response to the 'homogenizing' forces inherent in globalized modernity, place-specific design emerges as the integration of universally-shared modern technologies and local cultural traditions. The emphasis on making sustainability features overtly visible gives architecture a didactic role in enhancing both awareness of the sustainability crisis as well as appreciation of the cultural and ecological characteristics that constitute the unique identity of place and the people for which it is intended. A fundamental premise of this work is that contemporary global crises related to migration, loss of cultural identity, and ecological erosion require the engagement of people at the local level. A place-specific architecture creates the context for promoting a vested interest in one's own place, fundamental to both cultural self-worth and environmental stewardship.

Place-Specific Design: Architecture for Visible Sustainability has been published in Italy, both in English and in Italian. It is available in print at www.cleanedizioni.it and as an e-book at http://www.ebook-clean.it/

Hard copies are also available from the author at valzarro@ live.com  for $25.00. A review can be read at AIA Pittsburgh.
