Request for Volunteers for Student Design Charrette

Date: 10/23/23 10:00 AM
Location: Hyde Park, VT

On October 24, 2023, from approximately 10 AM to 2 PM, Stowe Electric Department (SED) is having an event that includes current college engineering and architecture students (University of Vermont, Norwich University, and Vermont State University) as well as K-12 students (Stowe High School, Green Mountain Technical & Career Center) in a design charrette. SED has an historic building that they want to renovate into a mixed-use office building that includes offices, conference space, and a power-outage command center. They want to include renewable energy sources and power backup. The renovation will include aesthetic, building envelope, HVAC, plumbing, power/lighting, communication/internet, and structural issues. Sitework issues also will be involved (parking, stormwater runoff, etc.).

The event will kick off with a short SED overview of the building, site and goals. Participants then will break into groups to brainstorm ideas, including sketches, issues, etc. Lunch will be served along the way. To work with the students, we think it would be helpful to have an architect and/or engineer with each group, both to aid in the brainstorming and also to help inform the students as questions arise and manage the process (university faculty will be there too). No specific knowledge of command centers is needed. After the brainstorming session, each group will report their ideas to an audience. The session should lead into senior capstone projects at the three universities this year, where more ideas will be generated and specific drawings and reports will be developed.

SED and the universities are taking care of the organization of the event. Architects/engineers are needed to just assist with the student groups during the process. The event is expected to be held at Green Mountain Technical & Career Center in Hyde Park, Vermont. Some details are still being finalized.
