Mass Timber Event

We are a non-profit group that provides education to the design community with using wood for commercial design/construction, and we are a completely free service to the design community when assistance is requested.  Feel free to join us on Wednesday as a walk in if anyone from AIA would like to join us:  http://www.woodworks.org/education-event/2018-q2-the-timber-revolution-burlington/

The Timber Revolution: Inspiring Architecture with Innovative Structural Systems in New England and Around the World

The ‘timber revolution’ seen internationally over the past decade is starting to change the way U.S. architects view structural wood building systems. As a structural building component, wood meets performance objectives while offering environmental benefits, including the ability to maximize carbon storage and minimize carbon dioxide emissions associated with the design, construction, and operation of buildings. Designers outside the U.S. regularly use mass timber products such as cross-laminated timber to drive positive environmental change through the power of design; however, this approach is not yet entrenched in the U.S. After an overview of mass timber products included in the current IBC and their use in conventional building types, discussion will turn to international projects where innovative structural wood products and systems have been used to maximize wood’s potential. Focus will then shift to New England, home to the largest concentration of timber buildings outside of Europe. While timber architecture of the past is still revered in the region, there is a modern style emerging—a fusion of traditional timber framing and mass timber systems. The development of this new tradition will be examined with a look at recently completed projects.

Speakers: Marc Rivard, PE, SE, WoodWorks and Jim DeStefano, P.E., AIA, F.SEI, DeStefano & Chamberlain, Inc.
