Tour of the Davis Center and the Museum, Williams College, Williamstown MA
AIA Western Mass' June program is both Spring in the Berkshires and a COTE program. We will visit two projects at William College: the recently completed Davis Center and the Museum, currently under construction. The tours will be led by Scott Henderson, Architect/Senior Project Manager at Williams College in the department of Planning, Design & Construction.
The Davis Center, completed in 2024 and designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates (in association with JGE Architecture + Design), manifests the enduring impact of student advocacy for social justice and inclusive community at Williams College. Tracing its roots to 1969 campus protests, the renovated and expanded Center reopened in 2024 as a hub of programs and spaces supporting historically underrepresented communities and advancing campus engagement with complex issues of identity, history and culture.
The Davis Center is net-zero operational carbon and net-zero embodied carbon, With Living Building Challenge Petal Certification, the Davis Center is a bold and vivid expression of Williams’ commitment to cultivating a community that is socially just, culturally rich, and ecologically restorative.
William College Museum
Opening in fall of 2027, the new museum, by architects SO – IL or Solid Objectives – Idenburg Liu & Perry Dean Rogers, is a space designed with students in mind, fostering a sense of belonging for campus members and the wider community, and an inclusive experience for all visitors. The building timber structure – an innovative design that merges art, sustainability, and advanced construction engineering – will offer substantial gallery space for showing more of the 15,000 works in the museum’s collection, as well as facilities for easy access to collections for student, faculty, and visiting scholar requests, and more object study classrooms.
